You might have heard of the term "long tail keywords" while learning to market online. First of all lets start with a keyword, which is simply a term that someone using a search engine will type into the search box while researching information online. A good example would be a keyword such as "life insurance quote".

This is a keyword phrase that someone would type into the search engine if they may have been looking to get a life insurance quote. Even though it is a group of words this is not necessarily considered a long-term keyword phrase.

Now on the other hand, if someone did a search using the phrase "a life insurance quote for a 45 year old man in Dallas", this is considered a long tail keyword phrase. The big difference between the two is the fact that the second search is a lot more specific which means that the person behind the search probably knows exactly what they are looking for.

It is said that searches such as these are more likely to translate into sales because the searcher is closer to the end of the buying cycle. They may have already done some previous research and are now closer to making a buying decision.

If you plan to invest in pay-per-click advertising you should be familiar with long tail keyword phrases, they will probably bring you a better return on your investment as opposed to general keyword phrases.

The other thing to keep in mind is that these phrases do not usually have a large volume of searches so you would want to make sure you also focus on volume with your long tail keyword campaign.
