I have to tell you this, when I first got started online I did what a lot of newbies do, I bought guaranteed traffic, and free and low cost advertising, and did lots of web directory submissions for my web site. I have bought Google Adwords advertising. I have participated in JV giveaways. I have used safelists and traffic exchanges. In short, I have done just about everything.

What I have found is that not only do I get more subscribers from my articles, relative to the time I spend writing and posting, than any other source of traffic, but I also have a higher response rate from subscribers who join my list via articles than I do from any other source.

Here is what I do:

I write a lot of articles - as many as 10-20 in one sitting. That might seem like a lot. But if this is the most profitable work I do online, why not write as much as my mind can hold out? 3) Ezine advertising. I like ezine advertising. Why? If someone opts into your list from an ezine ad, what do you know about them? You know they read their emails. You know they click through links in their emails. You know they do not unsubscribe. In short, they are everything you want in a subscriber.

2) Other people’s lists. And no, I don’t mean stealing or buying or anything like that. I mean an endorsed mailing. That is where you have someone else who has a list, mail an offer to their list that offers some incentive for their subscribers to opt in to your list. It may be a free report or a free product. It may be useful information that you can offer them. You can either pay the list owner or swap mailings with them. For example, you mail an offer for them, and they mail an offer for you.

Now you might think that this is a little obvious, but in the next few minutes I will reveal to you WHY this is important, HOW to do it, and identify some additional ways that you can grow your customers into loyal, repeat buyers, with higher lifetime value.

You might have heard somewhere along the way that it is less expensive to keep an existing customer than to acquire a new one. This statement is very true. And what's even more important to realize is that there are customers that are profitable customers, and those that are NOT profitable customers. And it's also true whether you have a bricks and mortar real world offline business, or your business is 100% online.

A study was done a few years back by a US bank, and they discovered that you can group your customers into five different categories. Instead of studying gross sales, which might have resulted in that old 80 / 20 rule where 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers (which applies to all industries) ... but instead they studied profitability.

Here was the result rounded off to whole numbers:

5% of households represented 80% of their gross profit.

11% of households represented 25% of their gross profit

28% of households - 16%

28% of households - 2%

Now wait ... are you following the math? That's more than 100% ... what's going on here? That's 123% of the gross profit!

I said five categories ... right? The fifth category, the remaining 28% represented -22% (negative) gross profit. Almost one third of the customers were causing a negative effect on the bottom line of this bank. Every time they did business with these customers, the bank lost money.

The two things that the bank learned was that they had to identify WHO the best customers were (let's call them the GOLD customers) and treat them better than all of the other five groups.

If you have a list of 1,000 customers, then you're only looking for 50! 5,000 customers? 250. Not a daunting task. And once you know WHO they are, there are steps you can take to increase your value to them ... Which in turn will create even more loyalty to you and more sales. Even if you have a list of 10,000 or 20,000 subscribers, you don't likely have 10,000 or 20,000 customers. So work with your CUSTOMER list when determining who your GOLD clientele are.

Here are some ways to reward them and treat them better.

* Have a special members only area of your site - for them ONLY

* Have a special seminar, webinar, or special report.

* Have a special invitation only or inner circle dinner at a conference

* Call them on the phone and thank them for their business

Dropping the losers.

In addition to keeping your gold customers loyal to your business, you should do something about the losers. If these customers are costing you money and eating up your profitability they are also cutting into the value and time that you can offer your best customers.

The first step is to identify them.

Once you know WHO they are you can reprice their services, or move them toward the door.

Who are the losers in your business? Do they need more hand-holding? Do they pay their bills slower? Do they call with seemingly unnecessary questions? Do you reply to their questions in a timely manner only to have months go by before THEY get back to YOU. And then by that point you have to reopen the files, re-educate yourself on the project and bring yourself back up to speed on where you were at with the project.

In a service-based business do they ask for repeated changes to the work you provide? And expect the edits done at YOUR expense instead of theirs? Do they negotiate your rates down to razor-thin profitability promising future business or high volumes of business? Or perhaps they even renegotiate with you AFTER the work is done, figuring they have YOU stretched over a barrel because you can't sell the custom work to someone else.

The other thought to consider is that your losing customers may not be like that to everyone they do business with. They might be GOLD customers to someone else. Or they might be a customer who becomes a GOLD customer down the road.

Sometimes there are reasons that a business might hold on to the losing customers. They might not actually be undesirable. Traffic building is such an important cornerstone of internet marketing that I think that even the big dogs make mistakes online with traffic – and are tempted to repeatedly spend their money on the wrong things online, especially when it comes to traffic.

So what are the last two myths about traffic?

You should buy lists – someone else has already done the work. This is one of the greatest lies – the important thing about a list is the relationship with you. If you buy a list, is there any relationship? No, or course not. This is one of the worst myths around – and although I have not fallen for it, I have fallen for mailing scams – I spend my good, hard earned money – and get nothing in return. The worst part is that we get so excited when we see a legitimate-looking sales page that really looks like it might be the answer to our traffic problems – and of course, it never is!

And for the #1, the number one myth:

Article marketing is only good for backlinks. That is crazy. I get as many as 30-40 new subscribers per day when I am actively writing and submitting articles like this one. That translates to around 100 very high quality visitors from writing articles just like this one. Article marketing is probably the highest form of traffic you can generate on the web. Article marketing is about the online thing I do right now to generate traffic – except of course my list – and I average around 400 unique visitors per day.

How to Choose a Topic for Your Article

The first place to start when you are choosing a topic is with your own web site. What products do you sell, what needs do you meet?

Write out a list of 15-20 different ideas or topics about which your typical customer might be interested. If you are having trouble thinking of topics, go to Ezine Articles and look at their list of categories. They have an incredibly complete list of categories from which to choose. Keep in mind that one of your topics or ideas might be in a different category than the one that you would normally think it would be in.

For example, in my case, article writing and article marketing are located in the writing and speaking category, not in the internet and businesses online section, where I am accustomed to submitting articles.

In fact, it is a good idea to look through every category, searching for possible topics that would appeal to your typical purchaser. You see, the more categories and topics you have to work with, the easier it will be to crank out multiple articles per day. For example, in my case, there are about 15 categories of internet and businesses online and in writing and speaking about which I can comfortably write and whose traffic would be a good fit for my web sites. By having 15 categories to work with, I can literally write 15 articles a day before I run out of categories in which to write fresh material. And if I brainstorm some, I can come up with subcategories.

For example, in my case, there is the category traffic building, where I have a lot of expertise. I can write a general article on traffic building as one of my first 15 articles for the day. But if I want to write more, I can write an article on pay-per-click advertising, on article marketing, on email advertising, on safelist and coregistration leads, on JV giveaways, on JV partnerships, and on ezine advertising, and on one of several additional areas of traffic building. By doing this, I greatly expand my ability to mass-produce articles daily. I am really only limited by my time and my concentration; I tend to get restless and bored when I write for more than a few hours (about 15-20 articles in a sitting).

Traffic building is certainly one of the foundations of your internet business – and if you do not have strong traffic, no matter what else you do right, you generally will not succeed.

When I say strong, I don’t just mean volume – I mean quality of traffic. If you have a million visitors but none of them buy, you are not doing well -- just eating up bandwidth.

But if you have only 100 visitors, but your conversion rate is 30%, then you have strong traffic. Ideally, you want to be somewhere in between.

When you started traffic building, you were not really sure who was a good visitor and who was not. You probably tried some forms of bulk traffic and realized that it just doesn’t convert. So you quit using it.

But you have spent a lot of time building links, exchanging links, sending traffic through Google, and you are converting some of it. And although those forms of traffic generation are time consuming, they are insidious. Because they don’t feel like hard work.

One of my favorite forms of quality traffic generation is article writing. Articles feel like hard work. Because you are creating. You are thinking. You have to plan and write and proofread. But when it is all said and done, you have much higher quality traffic, and that generally means buyers, if you have everything else set up right.

But I challenge you to do it. And when you do, do not send your article traffic to your main web page. Instead, send it somewhere different so that you can track the results from your article writing.

List Building – Are You Maximizing Your Use of Articles in Your List Building?

I guess that is a pretty direct question, but I kind of wanted it to be. You see, when I first started out building my list, I sent all kinds of traffic to my site. I did the forum thing and the Adwords thing, and even did some ezine advertising.

But I was writing articles to get links back to my web site so Google would smile on me, and that happened. But that didn’t really get me the big traffic. I mean, number one is nice, but if it is a long-tailed keyword, and I am just subscribing, not selling…hmm….that just doesn’t cut it.

But what was really interesting is the amount of direct traffic I was receiving to my web site. As much as 100-200 visitors per day, just from the article directories. And by the way, I only get that kind of response from the ‘big three’ article directories. I think the other 497 are fine if you are looking for backlinks, but if you want immediate traffic, the ‘big three’ is the way to go.

So my question again – are you maximizing your use of article in your list building? If you don’t know, I recommend that you submit like 25 articles to the ‘big three’ article directories and find out. By the way, when you do that, set up your squeeze page on a separate web page so that the only traffic that is going to it is from your articles, that way you know for sure how much the articles are helping.

The internet has a wealth of information to all kinds of people. You can find things and research the internet to see was new and what's going on in the world. For a marketer this is like gold because you can reach more people now than you could 20 years ago. Life it self is not changing it is the speed that is changing in our lives. We get thing so much faster that we forget to slow down and smell the roses. So we know that people surf the web everyday for one thing or another. As marketers we have to find out what they are surfing for and get them to buy from us. This is a game that is played on the internet everyday. So to get to my point you need to find away to drive traffic to your website. This causes several question to you, how do I do this, what am I going to sale, and who am I going to sell it too. Ok lets get into it traffic is what you need for your website. Traffic is how many people are going to your website everyday.

Traffic is not that hard to do if you know how but as I researched on my own I have found out that it is hard to get started in this type of business you need help to do this. So you need to find someone to help you and I have found that e-zines are great for information they have people who do that very thing. So read those articles from experts that know how to do marketing. Ok on traffic there is some free traffic sites that can help you get started if you go to Google search and type in free traffic it will pull up all kinds of traffic sites you can look at and register with.

But before you do this let me tell you a story about doing this and the mistakes I have made in doing so. When I went to these traffic sites I started registering in all kinds of traffic but I did not check my URL to make sure it is the right one. So all those sites I registered with were not working for me and I did not find this out until 2 weeks have gone bye. So I had to go back and fix each one but I could not remember all the ones I have gone to. So I when to my email to find the email they have sent me and I forgot that I did not set my email to save my email when I log out that was my second mistake. But it gets better when I went to the sites that I remember that I register to. I had to redo my URL and my traffic credits started over so to make a long story short 2 weeks down the drain. So make sure that the URL that you register is the right one and that your email is saved on each one you register. Don't be like me and blow your time and get no where. I have learned from that mistake and gone on so when you make a mistake and think that you can't do this.

Just remember that even we experts make mistakes too. I also got register with a traffic site that has a automatic refresh on it what that means is that it will refresh ever 18 to 25 seconds on your browser But you have to keep your browser open to do so. What I have learned to do is I will open my browser and start the traffic counter and then mimes it to my task bar. Task bar is the bar that is on the bottom of your screen in blue most of the time. But be careful some traffic sites have you click each time it refreshes. That's why I like the automatic ones you can drop them down and work on other thing as well and still make credits for ads for yourself. This is a slow way of doing it. But if you don't have the money for traffic this is away to get started and make some traffic for yourself. Then when you start making money then you can register to the paid traffic sites and drive more traffic to your site. But don't just do this alone.

C'mon, your English teacher wouldn't accept it, why do you think anyone else would? Make sure that when you are writing traffic driving articles, you do it in Notepad or xPad for Mac users. Microsoft Word will give you problems when you try to upload your articles online.

2. Blogging - this one sort of follows closely to writing free articles. Many people are catching up with blogging and it has become a really hot and new fad on the Internet for broader freedom of expression. Blogging can become a powerful traffic driver if you put the right stuff on your blog. Just like with any other social networking tool, the Golden Rules do apply. This means stuff like flaming or rude language should be eliminated.

I was attempting to explain what a Traffic Exchange is to one of my colleagues the other day because we were talking about books. I told him that I had recently written an audio e-book about the Traffic Exchange Industry.

Of course he said “what’s that?” Whammo, just like that I had his interest and was preparing to educate a new convert. My associates who is a smart guy informed me that Traffic Exchange does not exist in the dictionary, that point got me thinking.

Trends of the Traffic Titanic

I recently read an article titled "Crossing the Line" that really got my attention. Here is what I read "Affiliate marketing is now an integral part of the web's composition." This article was written by Greg Shepard and published in Revenue a magazine dedicated to affiliate marketing.

I agree with Mr. Shepard's statement however it is what he said next that surprised me, this is what he wrote "It's also now widely heraleded as the web's most cost-effective marketing vehicle."

Say what! No way, I happen to know of a marketing medium that is much more cost effective, results oriented and can be utilized for no-cost. Now do I have your attention, I hope so because those of us who have been in the Traffic Exchange Marketing Business and those that came before us could teach Mr. Shepard a lesson or two about affiliate marketing.

I liked the concept that he spoke of next and continued to read despite his previous statement. Mr. Shepard went on to mention something that I have incorporated at one of the marketing websites that I own. Greg went on to say that many Marketing and Traffic Delivery Merchants were creating a hybrid traffic delivery model called CPP (cost-plus-performance) vs. the old model of delivering impressions or hits on a CPM or cost per million basis.
